Megan McDermott of Counter Balance LLC. shows us her favorite jumping exercises to do with Dalman Jump Co. ground rails and jumps. She also shares with us how working with DJC has benefited her equestrian business.
What you need and setting up the jumping exercises
McDermott is doing the same exercise over both a series of ground rails and a series of actual jumps. Make sure you have enough jump poles and standards to set up this grid. You can also substitute in cavalettis for some of the ground rails or jumps!
Before going through the grid, McDermott likes to set up a straight line with just ground rails, set between nine and ten strides. She goes through this line several times on both leads, practicing lengthening and shortening the horse’s stride, getting different numbers each time.
Once warmed up, McDermott moves on to a grid of ground rails. This is a three or four stride to three bounces to another three or four strides. She says rails are one of her favorite ways to practice at home– you get to practice straightness, adjustability and practice the same sort of things you are going to see in the course without the wear and tear of the horse putting the effort into jumping.
After the ground rail grid, McDermott moves on to the exact same exercise but with jumps. The grid starts with an oxer than three or four strides to a series of three bounces that three or four strides to another oxer– both three or four strided lines are set at about 42 feet. She says she loves this jumping exercise because the horse has to jump across the oxer, then they have to be ready to collect or lengthen, then the bounce helps them recalibrate before having to do the exercise again.
