Irish show jumper Lorcan Gallagher shares some of his favorite exercises with his Dalman Jump Co. jumps at Heathman Farm in Wellington, FL.
How Lorcan Gallagher jump schools his horses at Heathman Farm
Gallagher likes to keep his jump schooling at home pretty simple. When he does jump, he starts with a straightforward cavaletti exercise– three cavaletti set at a normal four stride to four stride distance. He goes through this several times, adjusting the stride each time to work on the horse’s rideability.
Another cavaletti exercise he enjoys is a cavaletti circle. Here, he sets up four cavaletti in a round circle with a curving four strides in between each obstacle. “It’s a great exercise to get them riding around your leg and bending around that inside leg. You also have to use your outside leg to make sure they aren't falling out,” he says. “It's a good exercise to get the horses nice and supple and using their body.”
Gallagher then moves on to jumping his Dalman Jump Co. jumps. He starts over a small vertical a few times to warm up. Then he works through several jumping grids, or gymnastics. First he does three jumps in a row, at nine feet apart each– a bounce to a bounce. This teaches the horse to use their own balance while jumping.
The Irish rider then moves on to another grid. This one is a nine foot bounce to a one stride to another one stride. He uses DJC aluminum picket standards and round jump poles to set this up. Watch him demonstrate all the grid work here.
Why Lorcan Gallagher and Heathman Farm prefer to use Dalman Jump Co.
Heathman farms have several horse show jumps in their home ring to make sure the horses are prepared for competition. “The next time you go to the show, the horses are already used to that jump,” Gallagher says.
They also have DJC aluminum picket and stick standards. Gallagher says they are lightweight and easy to move around at home.
Heathman Farms uses a Dalman Jump Co. jump wagon to store and transport all their jumps. “It’s very useful to bring the horses in and out,” he says.
